We now live in Alberschwende, the village my mother is from. It is in the Bregenzerwald which is a valley in the alps of Austria. The Bregenzerwald is a very special area: people are proud and hard working. The landscape is beautiful with mountains everywhere. Nearly every valley in Vorarlberg has its own language, traditions and traditional clothing.
The traditional clothing for the women in the Bregenzerwald is called Juppe. This type of clothing is many years old and a lot of times it is passed down from generation to generation. I have always been fascinated by it and started wearing it as a little girl. My neighbor has many and I was allowed to borrow it when needed.
For our wedding my mom had one made for me and it is beautiful. I enjoy wearing it to formal events and to church. There are a few holidays in Austria when everybody wears it. Fronleichnam is one of them and I put mine one. My neighbor Hannelore braided my hair and I went to church with her and her grand-daughter. Here are some pictures.
Work in progress.
Finished hair.
Here are all the Alberschwende women in their Juppe (I am in the 3rd row on the right)
