Halloween was never a topic for us in Austria when we were growing up. Recently it got more popular and in some areas it is celebrated. Unfortunately in some regions it got a very bad reputation as the older kids took the "trick" too seriously and started destroying things. In some towns in Austria it is even forbidden because of that which makes me really sad.
So we decided to have our own little Halloween celebration on our street. There are 5 houses with 8 households and we wrote them all a letter at the beginning of October to let them know that we were going to celebrate Halloween. We invited all the kids to a Halloween party at our house and asked the adults to be prepared for us when we would come around for trick or treat. And then everybody was invited back to our house for Gluehwein (hot mulled wine) and tea.
The kids all showed up at around 6pm (and there were lots of them - total of 15) and most of them were already dressed up. We had Halloween treats ready, had some games prepared, had a face painting station for the ones that needed some more make up and every child got a little cloth bag to decorate to take for trick or treating with them.
At around 7:30 we got ready and started our walk from house to house. That took a while because there was no snow outside anymore, but it was still pretty cold and the kids all needed to bundle up. The kids were very excited and got lots of candy. Except one neighbor everybody was home and was prepared for us aka had candy ready. It was fun. We adults even got some schnaps along the way.
We then headed all back home where we had it nicely decorated outside with pumpkins and candles. While we were gone trick or treating my mom and aunt hat prepared some savory treats to eat and had warmed up the drinks. Everybody gathered outside to have some drinks and food and the rest of the neighbors came for a drink too.
Overall it was a successful evening and I am glad we were able to have Halloween for Finn and Lilly!
Our spiderweb cake
Lilly trying on all the costumes with the girls
Finn decided he wanted to be a cowboy - like mama
Lilly was a cute tiger, but not for long
Lilly as a bumble bee (did not like that either) and Philipp as our bunny
My aunt Barbara was here from Vienna
Larissa, Lilly (this time as a mouse) and Alissia
Finn and his cloth bag (we will use them again next year)
Barbara made some cheese fingers (they were yummy)
Facepainting going on
Philipp and Raphael
Vinzenz was a cat
All the kids again before taking off for trick or treating
All bundled up ready to go
Waiting patiently in line to get some candy
Afterwards everybody needed some drink and food
