Taufe Lara

On September 11th our niece Lara was born. She is my brother's 4th child, his second daughter. I am her godmother and on November 11th we had her christening at the Church in Mellau.

It was a small ceremony with only close family members. Alissia and Philipp played the guitar with their guitar teacher. Raphael did the reading and assisted the priest.

Afterwards we all headed home to Bernd and Rebecca. We had coffee and cake (lots of delicious homemade cake) and moved on to salads and sandwiches later on.

Overall it was a very nice and sweet celebration.

Laternenfest

The first week in November we had our "Laternenfest" at the local kidsgroup. Here is a great description of what it is and why we celebrate it at the beginning of November:

We all got together in the afternoon on November 8th and each kid got to decorate a lantern (Laterne). While the lanterns were drying the kids got to play and the moms got to have coffee and cake and chat.

Once it started to get dark we all lit little candles in the lanterns (I had brought electric ones for my kids) and we then went for a walk around the town and sang our lanternsong. It was really pretty and the kids loved it.

We since have used our lanterns many times and have gone for evening walks with them.

Finn had no interest working on his lantern - he preferred playing

Alissia came to pick us up and went around with us (great help for mama!)

Finn finally got some strips of paper onto his lantern

Lilly was very proud of her lantern

Going for our lantern walk and singing "Ich geh mit meiner Laterne..."

Normal kids weekend in Alberschwende...

Well, it is never boring here in Alberschwende. At the beginning of November we had a fun weekend with lots of friends around to visit and play. That is one nice thing about being close to family and friends!

Porto - weekend trip

A few weeks ago we flew to Portugal for my birthday present. We usually try to do something fun for our birthdays and I chose to fly to Porto (for Ben's birthday went to Dublin in June).
Ryanair (again) brought us there on cheap tickets and Ben had found a simple and reasonable hotel in the city center. And my family was sweet enough to watch our kids for 2 days!

We left Thursday night on a 9 o'clock flight and got there late. But with the time difference of one hour we could still take the metro into the city and we found our hotel right away. After a good night of rest (with no kids bothering us or waking us up), we set out to explore Porto. We went to the market and bought some souvenirs, we walked through the old part of town and then crossed over the bridge to visit the wine caves where they make port wine.

We chose 2 port wine makers we wanted to visit: Taylor's and Graham's. We went to Taylors first and had a great tour. Our guide was short, informative and really nice. We had tasted our ports before the tour as we had some time to wait.
After a great lunch (in a little restaurant by the river) we went to visit Graham's. There again we did the tasting before the tour as we had some time to spare, but we did not enjoy the tour as much as we did at Taylors.

By then the sun had come out and we walked back to the river and crossed over to the other side. But we were tired from all the walking by now and took a little tram up the hill and went to take a short nap at the hotel.

For dinner Ben had found this great unique Portuguese restaurant and we had a nice and very interesting dinner. The food was great and the wine too!

The next day we had breakfast at a little local bar around the corner and it was super yummy and cheap. We then set off to do some shopping, exploring the city, visiting a great old bookstore. We also found a cute crafts market along the way and we went back down to the river to have a little rest. There was also an art show held by students of the local university and we found some nice things there.
For lunch we found this great little "hole in the wall" and we had a nice last meal: a huge 2 course meal with bread, coffee and 1/2 litre of wine for 5 Euros! Amazing.

We then had to pack up already and head back to the airport as our plane left in the early evening. While waiting in line outside on the runway for the plane to be ready we enjoyed the last warm sunshine, because when we landed in Memmingen we had to uncover our car from ice and snow!

Great short escape to a beautiful city!

I am obsessed with the tiles - I took about 40 different tile pictures!

Lindau Jahrmarkt

The first weekend in November is always Jahrmarkt in Lindau, a big market/ fair on the island Lindau at the Bodensee. I used to go there as a kid with my parents already!

The weather was nice that Sunday so we took Finn and Lilly. We drove to Bregenz and parked there and then took the train over to Lindau (parking is difficult on the island and riding the train is always fun).

We then walked along the lake to the market. We bought some yummy nuts and yarn and spent some time at the fair enjoying the rides and games.

After a snack in the park we walked back to the train station and rode the train home.
Fun outing for everybody!

We all jumped

Even the kids jumped :-)

At the fishing game - I used to play this as a kid at the Jahrmarkt!

Of course Lilly too

We all won fishes

And then they went on this crazy ride - pretty wild

Not sure if Lilly liked it or not
